Kapamilya Top 5: Male Stars Who Almost Made It Big

They conquer showbusiness with a bang… and then suddenly their spotlight just faded away. This is KOW-Kapamilyalogy and we are counting up the Top 5 Male Stars who almost made it big. These are the celebrities who almost made it to the peak with starring roles in movies and teleseryes or even remarkable supporting roles, and then their career suddenly ends or went down due to sudden death, scandals, drugs or early fatherhood. Some of them are still active but their careers were already terribly affected. However, this doesn’t mean that some of these stars cannot have their second shots to fame, or even third. We didn’t include child stars in this list.

John Wayne Sace

Ranking 5th on our list is John Wayne Sace. John Wayne joined Star Magic in 2002 at the age of 13. He was immediately casted in the Star Cinema movie “Dekada ’70” with Piolo Pascual, Marvin Agustin and Vilma Santos. He was initially paired with Maja Salvador in the teleserye “Spirits” and was included in the teen group Anime together with Rayver Cruz. At that time, he was well known for his Robin Padilla-like stints. However due to rumored attitude problem and being a young father in 2010, his career suffered and took a downturn.

The remake of “Mara Clara” in 2010 has produced two of the brightest young stars today, Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes. Their love interest (it was a love triangle) was supposed to join them in fame and could possibly be the next prime leading man. That is only if his name has not been dragged with the surprising issue of early fatherhood. The tandem of Albie Casino and Kathryn has already gained a large following, collectively known as KathBie. Ranking 4th on our list, Albie has even won Best Awesome Young Actor in the 2011 Yahoo Philippines OMG! Awards. This taste of success was spoiled when his ex-girlfriend Andi Eigenmann announced in June 2011 that she’s 5 months pregnant. Andi revealed that the father of her child was her “first” boyfriend, who is supposed to be Albie. This news slammed down the career of Albie. Although he transferred to TV5 in 2013 and got some shows, his career doesn’t take off that well.

Midnight of April 17, 2011, all the Kapamilyas were shocked by the news that the young actor AJ Perez passed away due to a vehicular accident. Ranked as the 3rd on our list, AJ died just at the age of 18. AJ was discovered by ABS-CBN in a TV commercial for the chocolate drink Milo and was launched by Star Magic in 2006. In 2008, he joined Robi Domingo, Enchong Dee, Arron Villaflor and Sam Concepcion to form the ASAP Gigger Boys. AJ, Robi and Sam then were casted in the multi-narrative horror flick “Cinco” in 2010. And finally in 2011, he landed his first leading role in the teleserye “Sabel”, pairing him with Jessy Mendiola. Before the accident, AJ was in talks to appear in the Philippine remake of “Maria la del Barrio” and was also set to play a lead role in “Way Back Home”, the film debut of Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes. He has just finished taping one “Maalaala Mo Kaya” episode before he died and was shown post-humously. AJ could have been without a doubt one of the matinee idols today if his life was not cut short by the accident.

Second on our list is the Star Circle Quest Grand Winner Hero Angeles. After bagging the title as the first “Grand Teen Questor” in 2004, Hero appeared in several Kapamilya TV shows like the youth oriented program “SCQ Reload” and the fantaserye “Krystala” led by Judy Ann Santos. His team-up with Sandara Park was so popular back then with box-office movies like “Bcuz Of U” and “Can This Be Love”. However, this was cut short because of his controversial feud with the network. He then transferred to GMA7 in 2006 and even starred in some TV shows, however his career was not the same as before. Eventually in 2009, he left showbiz.

Among the male stars on our list, JM de Guzman is considered to be the most successful. JM has already made 3 teleseryes under his helm giving him the number 1 spot in this list. He started his career with Ang TV2 in 2001. He took a long leave in showbiz afterwards and came back in 2008 with supporting roles in some Precious Heart Romances teleseryes. Then in 2011, he was given his first big break with the remake of “Mula Sa Puso” bagging the role originally played by the late Rico Yan. Afterwards, he got the title role of “Angelito, Batang Ama”. This teleserye was so successful that ABS-CBN did the Book 2 entitled “Angelito, Ang Bagong Yugto” in 2012. He was about to play the Filipino saint Pedro Calungsod in a movie in 2013 when reports said that he entered rehabilitation because of drug use. Since then, his career has been set aside. However, his fans are still patiently waiting for his grand comeback.
