Kapamilya Top 5: Highly Anticipated Shelved Teleseryes

Teleseryes usually come and go, some lasted for two months and some finished after 2 years. But some of them were already launched but ended up in the bookshelves. This is KOW-Kapamilyalogy and we are listing down the Top 5 highly anticipated shelved shows. These shows are already in the planning period with some of them having complete casts and even have released teaser trailers.

Runners up for this list are “Mars Ravelo’s Sanlakas” and “Sanlakas Kids”.

Julia Barretto

Dubbed as the “would-be” launching vehicle of Julia Barretto, “Cofradia” ranked 5th in our list. Unveiled in May 2013, this teleserye is based on the Dominador Ad Castillo novel of the same title, which had film adaptations in 1953 and 1973. The story centers on Cofradia, a young woman who is afraid to fall in love because of her dark complexion. With the help of a magic candle, she eventually transforms into a beautiful lady. However due to racism and color discrimination issues, the management has decided to cancel the project as it might risk negatively affecting Barretto’s launching vehicle as a leading lady. This is in contrast to GMA7’s 2011 airing of another TV series with similar story. In July 2013, a press conference was held announcing Barretto would instead star in the lead role of a new, original series titled “Mira Bella”.

dolphymmkFourth on our list is the Pinocchio-inspired fantaserye “Utoy”. The series was launched in 2008 starring Makisig Morales and the late Comedy King Dolphy (Watch teaser here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFt8fwdGKSE). However, this series didn’t push through until Dolphy transferred to TV5 in 2010 and eventually passed away in July 2012. In 2012, another Pinocchio-inspired fantaserye entitled “E-Boy” was shown starring Bugoy Cariño as the title-role. This time, the story revolves around a child robot who was given human characteristics that led him to a journey where he will learn what being human is all about.

It was launched in December 2010 as part of the 1st quarter shows in 2011. Elwood Perez’s “Bagwis” is number 3 in our list. This was supposed to be Jewel Mische’s first major TV project as a Kapamilya opposite Gerald Anderson as the title role, aside from the 2-month long “Wansapanataym Presents Buhawi Jack”. Based on a 1989 movie starring Chuck Perez, it was shelved for undisclosed reason. However, “Bagwis” would still be a good material for a fantaserye in the future. Who do you think now fits the rolenow for winged superhero?

Richard-and-DawnDuring the last quarter of 2013, ABS-CBN announced the reunion project of the perennial loveteam Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta after the success of “Walang Hanggan”. The 2nd on our list, “You’re My Home” was supposed to be a powerhouse teleserye with Shaina Magdayao, Enchong Dee and Iza Calzado set to premiere January 2014. However, it was later announced that the project was shelved. For the meantime, Dawn will be seen in the Kapamilya version of “Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel” while the “CharDawn” fans patiently await for their TV comeback project.

Its teaser trailer was impressive, banking on the stellar cast with quotable lines such as “Hindi ako mayaman. Hindi ako sosyal. Pero maganda ako. Doon pa lang talo ka na.”, “You can never buy class, and breeding is never for sale.” and “They say beauty is power. That makes me the most powerful of all.” (Watch teaser here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8U43cyr0zs) Following the success of the fashionserye “Magkaribal”, “Alta” was announced in the last quarter of 2011 which would star Gretchen Barretto, KC Concepcion, Zanjoe Marudo, Luis Manzano, Diether Ocampo and Angelica Panganiban tackling the lives of people in the high society. In the early 2012, the project was shelved for undisclosed reasons. Gretchen was later included in “Princess And I” although she admits of being disappointed about the cancellation of the teleserye. Until now, ABS-CBN fans are still hoping that this grandiose teleserye will push through in the future and this makes “Alta” the most highly anticipated shelved teleserye of the Kapamilya network.

KAPAMILYA TOP 5: Breakthrough Kapuso-Turned-Kapamilya

Kapamilya, starting from now, we will have our weekly Kapamilya Top 5. So for today, we will list down the Top 5 Breakthrough Kapuso-Turned-Kapamilya stars. For this list, we excluded stars that already have shows in GMA7 which casted them as the lead roles. So you will not see Angel Locsin or Iza Calzado in this list. This is the list of stars who from being “unknown” became Certified Big Stars.

Runners-up for this list include Cristine Reyes and Megan Young.

Number 5 on our list is the Fil-Spanish actor Jake Cuenca. Jake was introduced with teeny bopper supporting roles in GMA7 in 2004. Two years later, he transferred to ABS-CBN via “Pedro Penduko”. His biggest Kapamilya break was being starred in the Primetime TV remake of “Palos” together with Cesar Montano. Since then, he has joined several hit teleseryes such as “Tayong Dalawa”, “Rubi”, “Maria Mercedes” among others. He will be again soon seen in Primetime with Julia Montes, Coco Martin and Kim Chiu through “Ikaw Lamang”.

Paulo Avelino joins our list as number 4 Breakthrough Kapuso-Turned-Kapamilya star. He was a product of a GMA7 talent reality show in 2006. Afterwhich, he has done supporting roles in various Kapuso drama series. He decided to join ABS-CBN in 2011 and in 2012, he achieved his biggest break through a major role for a primetime series, Walang Hanggan alongside Coco Martin and Julia Montes. He was commended for his remarkable acting in the said series. Currently, he is seen in “Honesto” and will be paired with Bea Alonzo via the upcoming TV series “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon”.

Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo gets the number 3 rank on our list. Although she was a part of the Ang TV gag show in the 90’s, we do not consider this as a start of her TV career since she was just a kid at that time. Her real TV career started in 2002 wherein Sarah competed and won in the Star for a Night singing contest aired in IBC-13. After that, she did a short stint in the now-defunct GMA7 variety show SOP in 2003. Sarah signed a contract with ABS-CBN network in 2004, which aired her first television series, Sarah the Teen Princess. She also became a regular host and performer on the variety show ASAP. She has proven her star prowess by drawing blockbuster concerts and movies such as her tandem trilogy with John Lloyd Cruz: “A Very Special Love”, “You Changed My Life” and “It Takes A Man And A Woman”. She will soon again be seen as a Judge/Coach in the prestigious franchise “The Voice of the Philippines”.

Who will forget her “I Love You Piolo!” scream in a softdrink TV ad in 2001? Toni Gonzaga is the number 2 on our list. From 2002 to 2004, she was tapped as a co-host for the longest running noontime show Eat! Bulaga. Foreseeing her promising talent as a TV host, ABS-CBN offered her a contract in 2005. Since then, she has been the host of the longest running reality show in Philippine TV, Pinoy Big Brother. She is now known as the “Ultimate Multimedia Star” because of her success in TV, movie and music recordings. Currently, she starred in the just-released hit movie “Starting Over Again” opposite Piolo Pascual and is seen in the TV comedy sitcom “Home Sweetie Home” opposite John Lloyd Cruz.

Ranking the first in our list is no other than Anne Curtis. Anne started her career playing younger sister or a female friend in GMA7 TV shows from 1997 to 2003. In 2004, she made the big switch as a Kapamilya star and was given lead roles in shows such as “Kampanerang Kuba”, “Maging Sino Ka Man” and “Dyosa”. Her biggest movie break was the phenomenal “No Other Woman” which is one of the highest-grossing Pinoy movies of all time. She is also one of the most followed stars in the social networks as she was the first Filipino star to reached 1 Million followers in Twitter. Proving that she can draw crowds, she is a leading product endorser in our country now. Currently, she is hosting the breakthrough noontime show “It’s Showtime” and will be seen swimming soon as the highly coveted “Dyesebel” in Primetime Bida.

Who would have thought that these “once-not-so-known stars” will hit fame that big after jumping fences?.
